Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja was today arrested for allegedly raping his domestic help at his residence and remanded to police custody till June 18 by a local court.
Ahuja, 36, arrested early this morning, was produced before a magistrate's court in suburban Andheri where prosecutor S S Kasture said the actor should be remanded to police custody for further investigations.
Ahuja is accused of raping the victim, who is said to be in her early 20s, when they were alone at his residence in suburban Oshiwara. He is also accused of threatening the girl.
Dressed in a yellow T-shirt and jeans, the actor was silent throughout the court proceedings and did not make eye-contact with anyone in the crowded court room. When asked by the court, Ahuja said he has no complaints against the police.
After hearing arguments from both sides the court remanded Ahuja till June 18.
"Well, a sense of shock and shame," noted film maker Mahesh Bhatt said when his reaction was sought on the incident. "The Shiney we have worked with and the Shiney that erupted in the headlines last night is not the same person".
Bhatt said "my sources in the police say that he has confessed to sex with consent. However, the victim's word is gospel truth in such matters".
