A powerful bomb was found on Monday near Phalej railway crossing in Ahmedabad, police said.
Police defused the bomb just minutes after a train passed over the device.
The bomb fitted with a timer was found by a security patrol in Anand station, said a senior police officer Ashok Kumar Mishra.
The bomb was timed for early morning but did not go off due to a fault in the device, Mishra said, adding a train had passed minutes before they found it.
Gujarat is one of the most communally sensitive states. A series of 16 bombs ripped through Ahmedabad in July last year, killing 45 people and wounding more than a hundred.
